Speaking Words of Love into Disaster
John writes that "No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us." In essence, John is saying that when we proclaim this Christmas love into the world, when we love into the world as Jesus loves, when we allow that same love of God to flow from our hands onto the people of God's creation, the world is then able to "see God." Certainly, in the face of the earthquake on December 26th and the tsunami that followed, a disaster affecting two continents, multiple countries, and millions of people, the world really does need to "see God." In the horror of seeing one's parents drown and one's children washed out to sea, in the reality of helplessly watching as one's home is swept away; seeing the face of God, feeling the life of God, and breathing in the hope of God's people may well be the ONLY place of healing.
Here is the good news! We can share God's love into this space of destruction, joy into the places of heartache, and proclaim hope into the midst of utter despair. Our United Methodist Committee on Relief is responding ... bringing relief into the arena of catastrophe, bringing your love, God's love, into a community of brokenness.
